Big Bill Broonzy was a great influence on my playing. He was the first country blues artist that I discovered. His guitar playing had a powerful drive. "Willie Mae" is based on his playing and the use of the monotonic bass. Combining this technique, also used by Mance Lipscomb, with the alternating bass can spice up your playing giving an interesting and pulsating sound. It is interesting to note how the same left hand fingerings can be used but by changing your right hand technique the feel of the music can change from a gentle rag to a driving blues feel.
