Dave Van Ronk is an icon in the story of fingerstyle guitar. When I was learning the roadmaps of fingerpicking I found it essential to learn Dave’s arrangements. In this first series of lessons Dave presents a wide selection of his folk and blues arrangements.

Lesson One: The alternating bass technique is presented with four arrangements: Green Green Rocky Road, Kansas City Blues, Stackerlee and Saturday Night Shuffle.

Lesson Two: Alternating the bass in 3/4 with The Ballad Of The IRT. Elizabeth Cotten’s Wilson Rag, Blind Blake’s That Will Never Happen No More and Mississippi John Hurt’s Spike Driver’s Moan.

Lesson Three: Brownie McGhee’s Sportin’ Life Blues played in dropped D tuning. Blues in 12/8 with St. James Infirmary played in Em.
