Doc Watson said that he heard "Deep River Blues" on a 1933 Delmore Brothers recording and tried to figure out how to play it in the style of Merle Travis. It became one of his signature pieces and is a great introduction to thumbstyle guitar. It is played in the key of E and uses first position chords with the addition of an E7 fingering up the neck. A real fun piece to play.
