Black Angel Blues was first recorded by Lucille Bogan in 1930, Tampa Red backed her on various recordings, though not Black Angel. It was a hit for Tampa Red and went on to be a hit for Robert Nighthawk and also B.B. King who changed the title to Sweet Little Angel. Black Angel Blues is the perfect example of how Tampa Red played in a slow blues style. The chord progression is consistent throughout the piece, however the fills are constantly changing leaving you with many new licks that can be applied in any Open D blues.
